Writing and D&D (With Puppies!)

(I wrote this post a while ago. I'm only just posting it.)
Hey Blogger Buds,
I'm not an RPG fanatic, and even though I can recognize a Dungeons and Dragons cube, I'm not a dork, even if Julie Kagawa disagrees (scroll to the last picture).

Today, I combined my latest guilty pleasure and writing. I googled, "finding your character's kryptonite" and I was lead to a page about RPGing. (For those of you not in the know, that stands for Role Playing Game, and even though Role Playing Gaming doesn't make sense, to RPGers, it does, so too bad.) My interest was piqued (great word, ain't that?) and I decided to give it a look.

The page is right here. It's a bit long, but I recommend reading it anyways. I usually avoid long web pages, but I read it all.
It actually had some great writing advice. (And some not so great writing advice, but we're going to ignore that.) The topic was How To Play Heroically.

1)Find your character's kryptonite. Look into their past. Superman would be, as the original poster put it "a superbore" without one thing that can bring him down. (I can't believe I'm about to say this.) Take a lesson from math, graphing. Find your point of origin. Ex: Puppies
2)Find what your character reacts to automatically. A)One thing they'll fight to the death for no matter what Ex: Puppies B)And one thing they're terrified of. Ex: Puppies
3)You're in charge of your destiny. Make your book character-driven, have your character do something. Don't always have them consulting everyone else. I know there's no "i" in "team", but there's an "i" in "win". Thinking is smart (wow. that's the best I can come up with? "thinking is smart"?) but being sporadic (huh. "sporadic" is with a d...) can be fun! Ex: Head to the pound for a Pomeranian
4)Drama!. Yeah, not in excess, and not always. If you're writing one of those self-mocking dramatic stories, go for it! If not...try to fit the context. Ex: Start talking to a puppy
5)Get creative. Enough said. The original article goes in a different direction than I want to, here. Ex: Beagles
6)Don't be selfish. Your main character isn't the only one with goals. Ex: Kitties


Okay, in all seriousness (Ha! Me? Serious?) (I like parenthesis today.), listen to me, and check out that link.

As Long As You'll Dine: A Wicked Parody

Hey Blogger Buds,
It's a music kind of week, I guess.
So you know the book Kiss Me Deadly? It's an anthology, 13 Tales of Paranormal Love, edited by Trisha Telep. I recently had a copy in my possession (A DNF. I got bored), and whenever I looked at the title, it made me think of the song from Broadway's Wicked, As Long As You're Mine. The song opens with "Kiss me too fiercely." So. I wrote a slightly mocking vampire parody.

If you've never heard the song before, I suggest you listen to it first, and then maybe listen to it again while reading the lyrics to this.
This is my first shot at parody song writing. Enjoy! (Be kind...)

This was totally not meant to offend Wicked or Kiss Me Deadly. Both are awesome. (I can't say anything about vampires though.)
I know the "two fangs" line is bad, but I couldn't think of anything better.
I'm kind of in love with the vampire's first solo. :-[

Panic! At the Disco Music Review

Straight off the bat apologies. I know, this is a book blog. I've seen many book blogs that post about music and things, but Riv Reads is all about books. And music isn't really book-related. It can be, seeing as many of us write while listening, but it's not so direct.
Anyway, I haven't finished any books recently, my schedule's been kind of packed. So I'm here to tell you about an album that came out back in '09, but I've pretty much been listening to on repeat. I'll go through each song, talking about certain lyrics, the meanings, and what I thought of it overall. Meanings will mostly be from songmeanings.net. I double-check most of my lyrics. If that site is really wrong, I'll use another. My quoted lyrics are correct, though.
I don't really expect you to go out and get it based on this review. I figure if you're a P!atD fan, you already have it if you want it.

I'm rating out of three. One, I didn't really like it. Two, it was okay. Three, it's one of the better songs on the album. One star doesn't mean the song was bad. It means I didn't love it as much as some other ones.

Very steampunk-esque

So. Vices and Virtues.
Overall, I love the album. The band split up a while ago, and there's a vast difference in the music. Songs from the first two albums have titles like, "She's a Handsome Woman," "Nine in the Afternoon," and "The Piano Knows Something I Don't Know". This album makes a lot more sense.

I had one major issue with the album, overall. At the end (sometimes the beginning, too) of most songs, was this little instrumental bit. Sometimes for ten seconds, other times for a minute. The instrumental was great in its own right, but it took away from the album, and just made me impatient for the next song to start.

Thoughts: I don't particular like this one, but it's got a good beat, and it's not so bad. It makes sense, fortunately. It is up to interpretation, as well.

Thoughts: I really like the beat on this one. It's quick and fun, and easy to listen to. I think it's great while you're exercising, for the tempo. I get bored of it pretty easily though, because the lyrics are mostly repetition.

Thoughts: This is the first song of the album to clearly be about the band breaking up, but it's more than that. It's about being together, and it definitely has a fantastic rhythm.

Favorite Line: "They were young and independent // And they thought they had it planned // Should have known right from the start you can't predict the end."

Thoughts: This is one of my absolute favorites from the album. It tells a story, but it has a further meaning than that. It's about the band breaking up. They were great to begin with, but they "lost momentum". They used to be "Young and independent" and they thought they knew what they were doing, but they had no idea what would happen later.


Song: Trade Mistakes

Favorite Line: "I may never sleep tonight // As long as you're still burning bright // If I could trade mistakes for sheep // Count me awake before you sleep" "Let me save you hold this rope // I am an anchor sinking her"

Thoughts: I'm obsessed with these lyrics. I think this chorus has the most brilliant lyrics. Ever. Trading mistakes for sheep, and talking about counting? Utter genius. I'm assuming this is another song about the band breaking up. (Though the line 'you can't sleep in this box with me' really makes me think of Edward refusing Bella. You know, coffins and all...)


Song: Ready To Go (Get Out of My Mind...)

Favorite Line: [One of the last lines, because of the beat change] "...I know //// I'm ready to go"

Thoughts: An average song, pretty catchy though.

Thoughts: "Trade Mistakes" had brilliant lyrics, but they're nothing like these. I'm absolutely obsessed with the lyrics in Always. It's a slower song, but that one of the reasons I love it so much. A nice bit of calm in the middle of an angsty, loud, album. :)

Favorite Line: "The world may call it a second chance but when I think back it was more of a relapse // Anticipation's on the other line and obsession called while you were out"
Rating: 3
Thoughts: Another favorite. I love the sound of it. It's also really sad. :( Another song about the band breaking up, but I can feel this one more than the others. It's a weird mix. The idea is really sad, the beat is happy, and he sings it like he's mourning. Which I guess he is.


Song: Sarah Smiles

Favorite Line: "Sarah smiles like Sarah doesn't care // She lives in her world so unaware // Does she know that my destiny lies with her?"
Rating: 3
Thoughts: I love this song because it reminds me a really good friend of mine. (She happens to hate the song, but oh well.) I interpret the song as the narrator being totally in love, but she doesn't understand the extent of it. She cares about him, but doesn't get that she's practically his whole world.

Thoughts: This one follows P!atD's old style of weirdness. It was written before the band broke up, and I think it was recorded back then too. I like how the album starts with "Ballad of the Mona Lisa" and it ends, with the last line being "Mona Lisa, please to please ya." It rounds out the album very well for me.

On The Terror Of Outlining

Yay! This is my 200th post! Now on to it...

 As you may know, I'm a pantser. When I try to outline, I ADD so much I...hey, is that a butterfly?

*five minute later*

At one point over the weekend, I was in a situation where I had no internet access and a computer. What did I do?

I opened Wordpad. (Yes, Wordpad. I hate Wordpad. But the computer I had in my possession was lacking the awesomeness of Word.)

And I made a heading. And a bullet point (well, originally I numbered it, but that didn't work out).
I've been nearing the end of my WIP, Eberheardt, for a while. The end has been so close I can almost taste it. If I stretch, my fingers can brush against it.
Anyway, I opened Wordpad. I recalled what I'm up to in my writing. And I began to outline.

And it was scary. Very scary. I have the rest of my book mapped out. I know what's going to happen.
And the idea that my baby is reaching the end of her story is just terrifying. Sure, revisions are next, and rewrites, and then the word that starts with "q", ends with "ery", and has a "u" in between. (I've stopped saying it, because it's become a more real thing.) My book baby won't be finished for a long time.

But I feel like, with this outline, the end is a more real thing.

The thing is, when you write high fantasy, this actually happens sometimes.

It's really, really, scary.

I'm terrified.

Do I plan to quit?

Never.

Do I plan to take a break?

Of course not.

Do I plan to take a deep breath, eat a Twizzler, and write?

Absolutely.

I'm a writer, like this kitteh.

Cuz writer cat iz writer, writer cat can write storiez without opposable thumbs.

And when I finish Eberheardt?

I'll write some of the other ideas that have been running through my head, and dripping down on to the paper every now and then.


I'm a writer. And when the end brings the kitteh-pocalypse gets tough, the tough find an awesome ending.



Any words of encouragement on endings? How do you deal with finishing a project that you've worked on for a long time?


And, most importantly, when Basement Cat challenges Ceiling Cat and the Final Battle Comes, who will you be rooting for? Ceiling Cat, or the side that has cookies?

Bargains and Betrayals Mini-Review and the Reason I Didn't Post on Sunday

Sorry for the late post today. I'm going to start with a mini-review for Bargains and Betrayals, the third 13 to Life book by Shannon Delany. Add it on Goodreads.  I'm calling this a mini-review, because I didn't write it in order to put it up here. I wrote down my thoughts on Goodreads, and I'm sharing them for you here.

This review is spoilery from 13 to Life, the first book, and slightly spoilery (I did my best to be vague) from the second book, Secrets and Shadows.
It's a strange thing when you find a second book that is better than the first. But while 13 To Life was good, Secrets and Shadows was amazing. And I therefore had high expectations for Bargains and Betrayals. I was bored with Jessie throughout the beginning. She was sitting there, away from everyone else, doing stuff that, although it moved the plot forward, was dull.
For this reason, Shannon Delany decided to write from Alexi's point of view as well; so we can see what else is going on. It was interesting to see how Alexi thought, he's a tragic figure. He has a sense of humor though, and it was enjoyable.
What bothered me was Pietr. He changed a lot while Jessie was gone, and when they were reunited, he was just so...weird. I'd seen him through Alexi's eyes a bit, but I don't understand how he changed so much in such a short amount of time.
All this aside, the book was amazing and brilliant. I feel like Shannon Delany could easily have wrapped up the entire series with this book, and it both excites me and annoys me that there's a sequel. I'm going to read it, of course, because I love these books, but it would be fine if there were just a few changes, and the books ended here.

I give Bargains and Betrayals 5 stars.

(Trust me, there were at least three or four more books that I would have gladly taken, if I'd had a little less [more?] sense.) I've read one of these, and I can't wait to get to the rest!

And go to any Borders still open in your area.
Trust me, it's worth the trip. I was actually insanely lucky that there were a handful of YA books left. (My sister told me, before we left "don't bother printing out a list of books you want. You'll probably just grab whatever's there." I didn't need to just grab. I had a slight selection.)
It's tragic about the Borders bankruptcy, and all the lost jobs, but can I ask you guys a question:
Do these books have gorgeous covers, or what?

What do you think of Borders closing down? Sad to lose the chain-store/indie? Happy to "finally get rid of that wannabe"?

I was debating what book I should publicize. Most of my favorites are insanely popular anyway. I decided on Gift of the Unmage. I read it a while ago, but it's a fantastic book. Just look at the title. "Gift of the Unmage" Doesn't it make you wonder? It's book one in the Worldweavers trilogy, followed by Spellspam and Cybermage.

A Tale Of Two Cities Midway Mention

I know, I'm giving you two MMs in a row. Sorry to disappoint! I haven't been reading much lately, except for A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. So, in the spirit of giving you guys something, here's my MM.
Warning, I'm feeling snarky today.
First a reminder:

Most of you've got the gist of A Tale Of Two Cities. French prince Charles denounces his title, moves to England, and--surprise!--falls in love with young Lucie. Also in love with the lovely girl is Sydney, the drunkard and Chuck's double. And while they're all living, happy and infatuated with each in England....France is bloodying her hands...and her very large knife on a stick. The peasants are revolting, and all the noble people are getting--how should I say this? They're getting....pwned.

MM:

As you all know A Tale of Two Cities is just a tad old. And the writing style? The same. I've never been a fan of classics, they were always hard for me to get through, and this book is no different. Sure, it has an original plot-line, billions of fans, and the fact that it survived 150 years has to mean something, but I'm not enjoying.

For one thing, the pacing is just weird and slow. This book could be shortened to, say, 75,000 words, which is about a 300 page YA book. I was reading a particularly descriptive paragraph and thinking, 'Who cares? What good is this doing? How is it helping me picture the scene better?'

Also, this book is about a lot of characters, many of whom are pretty much pointless. There's a dude, Jerry Cruncher, and his son, Jerry Cruncher (um, yeah. about that...). So far, Jerry has done very little except beat his wife up. (Jerry senior, that is. Junior is, like, 12.) The movie managed to do very well without Jerry squared, except for one "blink and you miss it" scene. I can't say I'm on the edge of my seat in anticipation, though.

On the plus side, this book is great if you have insomnia!

I give A Tale of Two Cities 0 stars so far.

I'm on page 170 out of 386 (of story. With the end pages, afterword etc. it's 397.)

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater (Octover 18)
It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.
At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.
Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh (January 17)
